A proper old-skool night for people who still care about the music

Cut Above The Rest returns to the newly refurbished — and thankfully now heated! — Electric Circus in Burnley.

The idea behind these nights is simple.

We wanted somewhere our friends and other like-minded music lovers could get together, have a rave and hear the sort of records we actually want to hear ourselves.

That means you can expect:

✓ Six hours of underground classics

House, techno, trance, acid, breakbeat and rave from the late ’80s, ’90s and beyond.

✓ Proper DJing

Mixing, scratching and turntable skills rather than simply letting tracks play from beginning to end.

✓ A 4,000W MM Acoustics sound system

We’ve hired a proper system specifically for the night because these records deserve to be heard properly.

✓ An intimate warehouse-style venue

The Electric Circus has loads of character, a friendly atmosphere and, yes, it even has its own tram inside.

✓ A crowd who are there for the right reasons

These nights started as a way of bringing friends together, and that has helped create a genuinely friendly crowd of people who simply love good dance music.

Who’s playing?

DJ Kippax

I’m James — DJ Kippax — and I organise Cut Above The Rest.

I’ve been mixing and scratching dance music for more than 25 years, and I’ve been running DJKippax.com since 2006.

My sets aren’t just about playing a collection of old records.

I combine proper mixing with advanced turntable scratching while moving between different styles of underground dance music.

On 28 November I’ll be playing:

Early night: 2hr set of classic house, techno and breaks

Last 2hrs: Faster old-skool breakbeat and rave, concentrating mainly on music from 1989–1996 – Prodigy, SL2, Liquid, and many more

And I’m deliberately staying away from simply playing the same obvious anthems you hear at every old-skool event. And sticking to playing original tunes – no modern remixes.

Joining me is DJ Pintsize, formerly a resident at ASYLUM and AFTERLIFE.

Pintsize specialises in classic hard house, trance and industrial techno from the ’90s and 2000s.

So across the six hours we’ll be able to move through several different sides of underground dance music rather than spending the entire night stuck in one sound.
